Journey To China

Travel with us as we journey to China to meet and bring home Margaret Virginia Mei (Maggie) and Mary Henley Yi (Mary Henley). We will document our travel via this blog site...we hope you enjoy keeping up with the Seven Sims!

Mark 9:36 - He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever welcomes one of these little ones in my name, welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me."

Sisters!?!...a Picnic in the hotel room...and a visit to Maggie's orphanage!

We got the chance to sleep in (at least a little...7am!) as we had no morning plans.  We (really the girls) took a bath, got all lotioned-up (they REALLY like the lotion!), and set up shop in the room to play!  Meritt jump on Skype and we talked with Grandmom and Pop-Pop; Macey, Matt and Grandmother; Marshall; and the Florida Sims (Kristen, Anna and Elle)...it was awesome to catch up with everyone!  And, the girls were full of themselves as they played in the background...and every once in a while they would pop into the conversation and practice calling everyone by name...we even got to see Mabel (our dog) on the screen.  Big adjustment coming for the girls as they get used to Mabel!  Above is Mary Henley's typical 3 year old facial response when you ask her to smile, look at the camera, say hello to someone or practically anything else!  Maggie thinks she's a hoot!
The next several pictures were taken as I was hiding behind a chair...they were so content playing with each other...giggling...laughing...sometimes fussing...just like sisters do!  Their personalities, as you would expect are so different, but they are at the core very happy little girls.  It is so cool to see how they are bonding with each other...sincerely taking care of each other...and most importantly, helping Meritt and I understand them by playing "communication charades"!  Our non-verbal skills have increased exponentially...Matt and Macey will need to learn a new language when we get home!
Not much more you can say about the picture above then how about those faces!?!  Yes, they are as cute in person as they appear on your screen!
This is my favorite picture of the day...Maggie quickly figured out her Leapad (and has the patience to wait for the screens to advance...Mary Henley not so much!)...anyway, Maggie is driving the interactive video and Mary Henley is WAY content to laugh along...I think this one was Dora the Explorer does Pop-goes-the-weasel!
Lunch picnic in the room...you may be asking...WHY IN THE WORLD don't you mean parents take these poor little girls outside for some fun!?!  Answer:  see previous Xian post of cold, smoggy, cold, no parks, can't cross the street photos and comments.  Can you say "cabin fever"!  Anyway, back to the Picnic in the room...please notice the stylish pink tutu's, fashionably sophisticated red shoes, our casual, laid-back pose...to include the ever popular leg-cross.  We had chicken and chips and a hamburger-like mixture on a buttered bun (labeled "American Burger" on the menu)...that the girls did not dig it, but daddy managed to get it down!
In the afternoon, I visited Maggie's orphanage (entrance picture above)...as you will recall, we made the decision that Meritt and the girls would stay back at the hotel as we were very afraid of how Maggie might react to seeing her "foster mom", caregivers and friends.  It was a really good decision...more on that in a minute.
A very nice picture of two wonderful caregivers that served Maggie when she was between the ages of 1 and 2.  They were so nice...and very warm!

A picture of Maggie's sleeping room until around August of last year which is when she moved across the courtyard to live with her foster-mom who also cared for 3 other children.  One of which was also adopted the same day we got Maggie.  Very, very hard on her foster-mom.
Kids from Maggie's class who sang a song for me...very sweet.  Her teacher is in the white and black jacket to the right...she told me how happy she was for Maggie!  As with the orphanage in Hefei...not a lot of heat...notice the heavy coats...this classroom is for the older children and is in the newest building on campus...built in 1999.  Rooms were bright and cherry...but very cold!

Ok...so here it goes.  In addition to getting a tour of the orphanage, sleeping rooms and classrooms, I also went to the foster mom's apartment which is located on the 4th floor of the newer building right there on the orphanage campus.  There are a number of caring, giving moms and dads who provide foster care homes to selected children from within the orphanage.  Maggie was in a home with a single mom, who also cared for three other children.  The kids would go to the orphanage class rooms from 8am to 11:30am and then would return to the foster family room for lunch and a nap from 11:30am to 2:30pm.  They would then return to the orphanage class room until 5:30pm or so, when they would then "go home" for the evening.  The kids who were under this structure, including Maggie, were very, very fortunate to have a home-like environment (see the sleeping room picture above as unfortunate evidence).  And her foster mom really loves her.

Meritt and I would provide the most loving home possible for Maggie and that I would send her photos via email.  We cried a lot during this conversation.  She followed us out into the hall, constantly grabbing my hands and challenging me to ensure Maggie is fully provided for.  I hugged her one last time at the elevator (I thought)...she was intent on getting into the elevator with me, but the orphanage Director managed to pull her back.  As we rode down the elevator and made our way to the car, our guide (Celine) commented that she had never experienced anything quite as difficult.

It was an incredibly hard visit...one that I am now fully convinced Maggie did not need to experience.  It brings tears even as I type.  Matt asked me to turn in my "man card" today because of some of my blog comments.  Sorry dude...this one stays in!

By the way, Meritt asked me to please let everyone know how much we love to read your comments each and every day.  It is the first thing we do in the morning...and, it helps us keep connected!  Sincere thanks!

Tomorrow is as they say in golf "moving day"...we head to Guangzhou on a 7pm flight...seven days and counting!

  1. Mike & Meritt: This post brings sad tears and tears of joy. It is so comforting to know that Maggie had someone special to look after her and why leaving was so difficult. The pictures of the girls are just wonderful. They are so precious and seem to have bonded so well. I am still amazed at how they have been able to transition into their new life. Children are amazing. Not many more days left before you are home and we cannot wait. Love to all, Mom & Dad

  3. Hi there! Jody McNatt shared your blog with me as I live in Doublegate as well and have two precious girls from China. I absolutely love reading how the girls are adjusting and making progress everyday- and your post about God making sure to give you Mary Henley first to help Maggie adjust gave me chills- amazing! It's hard to imagine how strong these foster moms must be to hand over their babies- my youngest was in a foster home as well- but so reassuring to know that these babies were loved. I am so excited for you all and look forward to meeting you when you get home and things settle down. It's been great fun for me to relive the experience of adopting my girls thru your blog!

  4. i think we ate some of that "american hamburger" i.e., mystery meat ourselves...the food thing is crazy. it will be a bit better in GZ. remember to find the irish pub behind the garden hotel. french fries and beer, my friends! =) there's also a pizza hut down the street where the pizza is served more like american pizza and less like ketchup on dough. locate that place quickly. the girls look wonderful. we love the escapades. bella is going to be so thankful when the rest of her triplets arrive home. she has much to show and tell them. the other day her preschool teacher was buckling her into the backseat at carpool and she asked me, "who in the world is mary henley?" apparently bella told her classmates all about her new bffs.

there really are no words for going back to the place in which your daughter lived for a few years...seeing the bed she slept in...meeting the woman who brushed her hair and held her hand... those images will be imprinted on your heart forever. bella was just looking at her album the other day and when she came to the picture of her orphanage bed, she she shook her head and said "bella no sleep there now."
no, bella doesn't sleep there anymore...she sure doesn't. but she did... and we give thanks there was a place for her to lay her little head for those years in china while God was working on our hearts here in georgia. those little beds remind me of matthew 8:20 "foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." Jesus understands perfectly what those little beds mean to those of us who have adopted.

meritt -- i had to go see dr. barber today. told him and jennifer about your adoption thing...they said to tell you they think you rock and they'll be praying! (wonder what dr. woods would say?? =)

one week from today. that's been my thought all morning. you'll be home in one week. start preparing, mike and meritt. for as emotional as it is in china...when you see these two girls in the arms of your other children...well, let's just say, little can compare. china is surreal. certainly living in a hotel room, eating mystery meat and picnicing in pink tutus is surreal. or is it? okay, i think i am blogging on your blog. sorry. love you and miss you.

  10. Morning guys - I so look forward to your blog!! Great post BTW!! Mike - no need to turn in your 'man card' in fact - we might have to get you a gold card - it takes a real man to do what you did today!! We are still in touch with our Korean daughter and Chinese son's foster families. I think the orphanage for Chinese daughter follows the family too but can't be sure. I post picture updates on a web site for them (www.anaturalplace.com/family - you should be able to see it from China) and would be happy to share how I do that with you when you are back and settled if you are interested!

Oh - and if you have any military time in your past you would have recognized that 'american burger' - but called it SOS!! I'm.just.sayin'....

Reading in between the lines on the comments - you'll be at the Garden in GZ. Nice place - we stayed there on one trip. The bathroom floors were marble - they will be really slick after showers - we had a couple of bumped heads - the kids did too! ;) Word to the wise...

and the Pizza Hut - yeah - we did carry out from there a couple times at the end of a busy day when the kids were tired (we traveled with a 6 yo / 3yo / and adopted a 2 yo on that trip). I'd go to the pizza hut and order the carry out pizza, then go downstairs to the stop and go (pizza hut on level 2, stop and go in basement) and grab a couple soft drinks and a big bottle of Tsing Dao (about 3.5 RMB or $0.50 US each for both soft drinks and beer - and more than enough beer for two!) throw the drinks in a back pack and then pick up the pizza and back to the hotel - good stuff there! And note that carry out pizza is square so it fits the box better!

By now y'all are in the air to GZ - a week to go - great times ahead!

    You guys are cool -

    hugs - aus and co.

  12. Loving the pics of the girls that clearly shows them bonding!! They are just too cute!! I was so happy that you and Merrit stuck with your decision to not take Maggie back to her orphanage--I shudder to think how hard that would have been for her and cannot even imagine the foster Mom letting go not just Maggie but another child was well. I am sure she loved them like her own. Uh oh, I think I have to turn in my man card too!! I know you guys must be so ready to get home and introduce the girls to the rest of the family, to their new home AND eat normal "American" food!!! Wonder how long it will take the girls to get used to eating what we eat. Cannot wait to hear what things they like! Have a safe trip to your next destination and I will keep my fingers crossed that the rest of the trip goes by fast for you all, I can tell that you guys are more than ready to get home!! Again, cannot tell you how much I look forward to the blog every single morning!! You must keep it up even when you get back so we can all see how the girls are adjusting to their new home, their new siblings, their new dog (uh oh, hope they are not scared of Mabel) their new room and all the other numerous things that will be NEW to them!! Safe travels!!!
